Places to Visit in Puerto Rico!
I hear it all the time, “I loved Puerto Rico, we stayed in Condado and it was awesome”. This is great but it also makes me sad because there are 77 other towns with an amazing array of things to do. So here are my top 10 places to visit that are not in San Juan or Condado (which are the typical tourist towns).
Fajardo: El Yunque Rain Forest
About an hour away, this is the most beautiful and accessible rain forest. There are different hike trails, plenty of waterfalls and breathtaking views. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or seasoned hiker there are trails for all. For more information visit their webpage here.
Ponce: Hacienda Buena Vista
This hacienda, still active today, grows coffee when in season as well as corn and other grains. You can take a tour of the whole hacienda. There are beautiful views, and tons of history. You get a chance to also see how the mechanism works and it’s an amazing tranquil place. Just make sure to call ahead and make a reservation. There are no walk up tours available.
Museo Castillo Serrallés
El Castillo Serralles is the castle/ house of the Serrallés family. The Serrallés family are the patrons of Don Q Rum and their role in the island politics and culture has played an incredible role. The castle is a museum where you can see every original item left by the family. You watch a video and they even have a bar! The tour can be in English or Spanish (make sure you specify when you call to reserve a tour. While you are at the Museo Castillo Serrallés, make sure to check out La Cruceta del Vigía and the Jardín Japonés. La Cruceta del Vigía is an old observatory structure used to watch for Spanish attacks on the Island, there is an elevator that takes you to the top where you get incredible views of Caja de Muerto and the city of Ponce. El Jardín Japonés (Japanese Garden) is just a relaxing oasis in the middle of it all. For more information click here.
Arecibo: Radar de Arecibo
This is an obligatory visit if you are in the Island. Why should you visit? Simple: “As the site of the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope, the Observatory is recognized as one of the most important national centers for research in radio astronomy, planetary radar and terrestrial aeronomy.”* While you are there you will watch a video of the history of the radar and can see it from the top. Plus if you’re a movie fan, you can quickly identify the dish as it has appeared in some Hollywood movies including Golden Eye.
Jayuya: Museo del Cemí
These 3 places are in the same town and they are all of great historical value for the Island. This is the history of the indigenous people of the Island the Taínos. I would recommend going to Museo el Cemi first, because you will get a brief look and history of the Tainos. After you can go visit La Piedra Tibes which has original petroglyphs from the Tainos. Last I would take a nice downhill hike to the river to see the biggest rock with petroglyphs. You will get wet! If you want more information of these and the many other places to visit in Jayuya visit their site here. Also, if you want to find other places in Jayuya check out #jayuyaestademoda on Instagram!

Lajas: La Bahía Fosforescente y los mangles
La Bahía Fosforescente is one of the last couple of bioluminescent bays in the world. Basically the water glows when it moves because of the microorganisms in the water. If you’ve never seen this it is a MUST. Definitely one of the wonders of the world. To visit the bay you can go on one of the charter boats that go out nightly. If I were you, I would rent a boat (you can usually rent one for the day) and before the sun goes down go visit los manglares (mangroves). You will be in awe with the amazing tunnels created by the mangroves. This is a big residential area for manatees and turtles so be on the lookout.
Cayey: La Ruta del lechón
Puerto Rico is all about the food, so there’s no surprise there’s a highway dedicated to food! Also known as the Pork Highway, this is a foodies heaven. Not only will you find the most delicious and fresh pork, you will find music, places to sit and relax as well as many other delicious foods like arroz con gandules, morcilla, guineos en escabeche, chicharrón. There are tons of beer options and other drinks as well. Delicious food, Island atmosphere and did I mention delicious food. If you need more information check their website here.
Camuy: Río de las Cuevas de Camuy
Update September 2019: The Caverns are still close due to Hurricane Maria. Please call for more information.
Think you’ve seen it all? How about seeing one of the largest underground cave systems in the world. The Río Camuy runs through it, so the water definitely helps keep these amazing caves intact. You can take a tour of some of the caves and see the stalactites as well as the stalagmites. There are also tons of bat caves and you can see the bats while you go through the caves. While there make sure to sip from some of the water coming through the rocks (always ask the tour guide before you do), as the y are believed to have fountain of youth powers. Make sure when you visit to wear comfortable clothes and make sure to bring an extra pair of shoes that are not fit flops.
Guánica: Bosque Seco de Guánica
This is the desert forest. You can hike through this arid terrain and see the cactuses and complete environment that you see on the drive there. Also it has incredible views of the sea. It’s interesting to see the juxtaposition of environments within 5 miles. It is just something different to do while visiting a tropical island. If you need more information, including directions click here.
Most of the places on the list are appropriate for all ages, just make sure to call ahead if there are any special needs. You can also call the Puerto Rico Tourism office if you need more details on any of the places I’ve listed. I do have to note, these places are very near and dear to my heart, which is one of the reasons they made the list. If you don’t want to venture out of the San Juan area, make sure you check out some of the other extra stuff while there. You can visit the Parque La Marquesa in Guaynabo, the park has some hike trails, a man-made waterfall and an aviary. Another place to check out is the Casa Bacardí. You can take a tour of the distillery and learn about the most famous rum in the World. How it’s made and it’s history- plus they have a bar! El Museo del Niño is also a must especially if you have little kids and don’t forget to try a fresh coconut and coconut candy in Piñones. You can get more information by visiting Discover Puerto Rico.

Thank you for sharing this!!
