When you have children everything is a concern. How are we going to take care of them? Where are they going to sleep? Am I going to be a good parent? What food should I buy? How many times should I change their diaper? And so on. There is one thing that we really don’t think about- How safe is the crib we are using!? Most parents will look at two things when choosing a crib: style and price. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Delta Children safety testing facility.
The first thing I want to talk about is how Delta standards are above the federal standard. The Federal standard when pounding the crib for safety test is 250 impacts at 30lbs, the Delta standard is 1,000 impacts at 30lbs. This is a HUGE difference because, if you have an active child or even plan to use the crib with multiple kids it’s important to know the crib will be safe and hold up. Not only are they checking the bottom of the crib but they are testing the side railings and even each individual slat.
Delta goes beyond the normal testing. Like the slat testing. Usually the test is 1 in every 4, at Delta they test each one with 80lbs. While at the facility I also learned that they test even toy boxes. The toy boxes, even though they are quite affordable, are tested to make sure the lid doesn’t slam in small children. They are also designed with openings on the sides and a lowered front in case a child gets stuck inside, they can get air. As a mom, this things really never occurred to me.
Strollers are also tested to very high standards. One of the test is the treadmill durability test. The stroller is put on a treadmill with bumps for 300 hours, that is more than 3xs the standard test. Delta also made sure to add different size bumps and in different parent to make the test more realistic. This will imitate a mom driving around with the stroller with the maximum weight the stroller can handle. Another stroller test is the break test. It is a very interesting mathematical format they use to increase the safety.
I really can’t even explain how impressed I was with the amount of testing the products go through. I never thought a company would go through such lengths for safety of children. Technically all should and they all probably do, but Delta Children really takes it to the next level. They even test the little chairs and walkers, to make sure they don’t pose a danger to the kids.
Since I was there about a week ago, I’ve been trying to decide which Delta toddler bed to get for baby G3 since she wants no crib and wants a big girl bed. I am excited and feel that my child would be the most safe in a Delta bed. I haven’t had that feeling in a very long time.
I want to add a special note. The president of the company, Joseph Shamie, walked us through the process, I have never in my whole life, met a man with such passion for his product. For him to take the time for us and go in detail about his product and his family and the importance of safety was a real joy!
