You are planning a family vacation, but have no idea where to go. Maybe from the blog you know I go to Virginia a lot, but I usually don’t get a chance to tour around. This time I picked a couple of place and want to share the good and the bad. Alexandria is a town outside Washington, D.C. The area is pretty large and has tons of places of interest to visit. Our first stop was Old Town Alexandria. This old town is full of charm right by the Potomac River. With views of the Capitol, this town has restaurants, shops, and parks. To the Waterfront it’s about 15 minutes from D.C. You can park, as they have plenty of street parking (2 hour limit) but they also have garages. If you are staying in D.C. and have no car you can also take a water taxi across the river to Old Town. When you get to the Waterfront there are a couple of things you can do. Founders Park, has some trails for biking or walking as well as beautiful sitting spots overlooking the River (perfect for a picnic). The park connects with the boardwalk. As you walk the boardwalk you can see different things like the Torpedo Factory. The Torpedo Factory is an old torpedo factory turned art central. It’s home to over 80 art studios. You can visit the studios as well as shop some of the art. Although you might think toddlers are a bit young for art, the factory is pretty kid friendly, it even has a giant chalk board at the entrance where kids can draw and create. It’s also great to introduce them early on to painters and other artist. While you’re there make sure to read all about the story of the factory and how it operated during the 1930’s. Once you come out of the Torpedo Factory you are in Old Town Alexandria. This is just one of those charming towns that makes me want to come back time and time again. With tree-lined streets, trendy restaurant and great shops, you’ll find yourself fully emerged in this town within minutes. On Main Street you will find new stores Paper Source and also local shops like The Lucky Knot. The charming shop has tons of brands including some of my favorites Lilly Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines. I love that the store is basically the house, and you feel like you’re shopping in comfort. I really love the atmosphere around Old Town Alexandria. To me, is important kids get exposed to as much history as possible early on, so trips like these are special because we are learning while we have fun. When you’re hungry there’s plenty of options from waterfront restaurants to local eateries. And for dessert Ben & Jerry’s is a MUST.
After we walked through Old Town Alexandria, we got in the car and drove about 7 minutes to a little shopping mall where we had a later lunch at Lost Dog Cafe. I was with a group of about 5 adults and 8 kids so we had to find somewhere we could be accommodated. The cafe has a super large menu ranging from awesome pizza to make your own sandwiches. They are super kid friendly and if you like beer, their beer menu is also pretty vast. If you are in Alexandria your next stop has to be the Sugar Shack Donuts. These donuts are AMAZING! They have your usual donut flavors like glazed and chocolate, but they also have Taste Like Samoa (Girl Scout Cookie) and Maple Bacon! Yes!!! Maple Bacon. Not to mention their coffee was pretty tasty and the joint is cool, with donuts hanging from the ceiling and a chalk board to write on.When donuts were done, we decided to head on to the National Harbor. The harbor is about a 5 minute drive from Old Town Alexandria. What to do there? Eat, relax, take awesome pictures, enjoy. The National Harbor has been recently remodeled and you will not be disappointed. Tons of restaurants, an astro turf with huge screen (usually playing sports), playground and carousel for kids, even a Children’s Museum. My toddler loved this part of the day the best. Every time I’m in Virginia or MD, I always try to stop here because the kids really enjoy it. You can play with sand right by the water in between the statue of The Awakening. Kid climb on the mouth and even use the feet as slide. Also while there, you can hop on the Capitol Wheel, and check out the most amazing views of D.C. Prices are $15 for adults and $11.25 for kids over 2. You can ride it during the day but they are also open until 11pm so you can check out the night views from high up. During the summer time they also have movie nights that are free, so make sure to check the calendar and plan accordingly. Bring your own cooler or just go shopping for snacks at the centers supermarket or the CVS pharmacy. And if you really like shopping, the Tanger Outlets are right next door. My must stop while at the Harbor is the Peeps store! There are tons of things to do in just a couple of spots. On my next post I’ll take you around D.C. to make sure you see the good and not spend time on the bad. If you have any questions on any of the places I mentioned don’t forget to check their websites. This is not a sponsored post and all pictures are my own. I happen to love Virginia & D.C. and consider it my second home, so thought it’d be nice to show you what it’s all about. If you are looking for hotels, I recommend Marriott Hotels because their services are always good and they are affordable without sacrificing quality. I also drive most places, but if you are in D.C. metro area and take the Metro, make sure to have a card and pay for the stops you are going too, as it’s not a flat fee. I hope you are planning your next vacation soon!
